Sometimes its good to be unknown, quitely going undected, letting other bully boys drink and boost in the Black Platemail armour. When your not the strongest, or brightest, or uglyest, or have grand plans then intrigue and guile become a second skin.
This is Cyrics mantra.
DOOM had returned home after the disasterous encounter with the Big B’s gatekeeper, the snows of winter had finally come to the surface of Waterdeep and commerce had come to a halt! With no big trading companies working money would be tight (for the thieves) and opportunity knocks. What follows is Cyrics three step plan.
1. A Base
After living in a “shit hole” within the Waterdeep docks district for the better part of a year a cosy base of operations to plan and execute swindles, heists, and murders sounds really attractive. First the stench of Bane was removed from DOOMs unground lair and reconsecrated to MASK. Red/Purle carpet was added in places to appease Reginald and Sir Lanceabit. In Sir Lanceabit’s case kegs of bad brandy also needed to be sourced. A base like this always attracts other undesireables which suits Cyric. If you want something done why not have someone else do it for you!
2. Invest (Property), invest (People), invest (Protection)
If you want to live the good life you need money. Under management by Cyrics henchmen (Sithus Blackheart) Cyrics investment into “Dancing Halls” were starting to pay dividends. Dancing Hall’s do a lively trade when it gets dark. But why leave the patron with money in his pocket. Combining the engineering expertise of Sly and magic of Mask two Gamblings halls were dug beneath the Dancing Halls into the very rock itself. Where gold flows so tongues waggle …. and DOOMs spy network hears.
Protecting your investment is always important. Enforced by Solonor Blackheart and Silence, when guards don’t deter, then intimidation, coercion, bribery and killing always do. Send the message aloud and messy. But make sure your not seen as the one doing it.
3. Take time for yourself
After a couple of weeks of work (Yuk), testing the “dancers”, watching others work, Cyric finally followed his fathers advice, and became someone. Well not in the way his father would have wanted. One night drinking, disguised as a noble merchant, at the Sated Spectre , a drunk noble entered with an attractive women pulling at his arm. Cyric imediately noted the wealth of the young man but also the attractiveness of the girl AND WANTED BOTH. Over the course of the next hour Cyric had earned the trust of the noble, gleaned that the trip to the docks had been on a dare and was invited to drink with them back at his fathers house. Which he accepted.
Upon leaving the establishment they were set upon by a couple of local thugs demanding the attention of the noble girl. Cyric immediately pulled his knife and defended his “marks”, using thieves cant under his breath, “drove off” the thugs. Helped by Cyric they reached the house safely where upon tales were told of his “bravery” in the face of adversary. Using his acting skills Cyric spun the tale into heroic proportions, causing his hosts to roll around the floor in hystirics. Realising it was very late and cold the young noble offered Cyric a place to stay for the night.
Drinking late into the night, had caused the young noble to fade, Cyric soon found himself alone as the noble slept in a chair by the fire. Throwing a blanket over his host, utilising his Hat of Disguise assummed the face of the noble, crept up to his room and seduced his girl. Then crept back to the chair beside the noble. In the morning he noted the “moon eyes” the girl gave the young noble while the noble just looked confused. Over breakfast Cyric spun more tales of heroic adventure, making comical heroes out of villains, before giving his excuse to leave. But the young noble would have none of it, insisting Cyric have a “place to stay” over the winter snows while his father was away for the winter.
Since Cyric had not yet relieved the young noble of his inheritance he agreed. Over the course of the next few weeks Cyric, kept warm, told many tales, some even had some truth to them, had quite a few late night dalliances with the noble girl and generally gathered information on the family fortune/business interests……
