In the morning the Fence, Hulfast, was quickly found and informed that it was in his best interest to assist in the recovery of the missing Fire Lizard Eggs. He agreed, but had a problem. Unfortunately he dealt in rare animals and one such had escaped and was running amok at his warehouse. He informed DOOM that it was a basilisk. Foolishly DOOM shrugged and agreed to assist. Amazingly Kerreth had indeed even remembered to learn a Gaze reflection spell. Approaching the warehouse Hulfast removed the bar and scampered away. Kerreth cast her spell with everyone else hiding under the eves of the warehouse. The plan was simple, Both Lanceabit and Thraim (both now invisible) would approach and attempt to capture the creature using its hood that was provided by Hulfast. Kerreth would act as bait and draw out the creature protected under the Gaze Reflection spell. Amazingly it all went to plan, Kerreth walked in and drew the beastie out (only a lesser Basilisk), Lanceabit couldn’t help but look at it’s glowing eyes but didn’t turn to stone. Thraim jumped up onto some boxes in preparation of putting the hood on. Amazingly the Basilisk turned it’s eyes onto Kerreth, had it’s gaze reflected and was petrified just as Thraim jumped on it’s back, placed the hood over its head and said “ah ha beastie”. Hulfast was not so happy that his magical and valuable beast was now a statue, but still revealed that the eggs had been on sold onto a mage of good repute and potions maker.
DOOM wondered off to the mage’s residence and proceeded to knock on the door. It was answered by a Homunculus. Cyric introduced himself as Monty Cristo and demanded to see the mage himself. DOOM was invited in into the study where the mage himself met them.
Told them that the very eggs were stolen from this very table. As his back was turned Reginald attempted to backstab him, unfortunately bouncing off a Stoneskin. Surprisingly Both the Invisible Thraim and Lanceabit had been constantly chanting “Do it, do it, kill him” all the way there, and Reginald being the impulsive and repulsive little Gnome agreed and attempted to get his worldly desires. Oppps. As Reginald began to cast his most powerful killing spell, and Lanceabit strode forward with sword raised, the Mage vanished (Teleport without error) leaving the Homunculus to be splattered by Thraim as the statue outside the door to become animated (Stone Golem) and attack Kerreth and Sly. The brave count just hid in the corner and attempted to leave. Sly retreated allowing Kerreth to poke at it with the rapier. It attempted to splat her effectively slowing her and wounding her twice, before the now grinning Lanceabit casually chopped it into pieces. As the creature fell into pieces a scrabble could be heard from the Roof top. Apparently, the Mage had teleported to the local Waterdeep watch who had sent two Griffins to intercede. Cyric dropped a continual darkness gem outside the window and walked off. Reginald and Lanceabit turned invisible and walked out the front door. Thraim casually strolled out the door and walked innocently along the building overhang so the Griffins wouldn’t observe him. Kerreth teleported home successfully and instantly. Sly attempted to turn invisible only to be blinded by flashing lights and then had to slip silently and skilfully past two guardsmen who had come in to investigate.
Meeting back at the tavern some hard looks were levelled at the unrepentant gnome (and some small giggling from the Chaotic mage haters among them). The next course took a bit of time as Cyric now required his network to start to save the reputation of Monty Cristo. However, a discovery thanks to the surprising mage lurking in shadows (somehow not dead yet) revealed the place of the Eggs, where it all began. Upstairs in the shop at the scene of the very first DOOM burglary bungle. A dwarf, Otto Steeltoes, was noted as having received the stolen eggs. DOOM surveyed the building to see a band of Halflings leave the area. Thraim invisibly trailed them to their residence (telling their guard dogs to be quiet thanks to his ring) and decided to appear in their midst. The poor wee Halflings almost shat their collective pants as the plate mail wearing dwarf quietly informed them that they now work for “The new boss” or he was going to be very upset and bad things could happen. The terrified Halflings turned like a fat pancakes and told him that they did steal the eggs for the dwarf. Thraim told them to report to the Sated Spectre to meet their new boss, invited them to backstab him (they just shook their little fat heads) and strolled out giving a sausage to their Halfling mother on the stairs on the way out.
The Time to intercede with the dwarf coincided with darkness as Reginald (and now muscle for hire) Thraim knocked at the door. Kerreth watched from across the street. Reginald knocked at the door and announced that it was in his best interest financially to open the door. As he greedily opened the door, Reginald stepped back allowing the boot of Thraim to kick the door in. A battle of semi epic proportions occurred as Thraim systemically used the mace to batter the dwarf to death. Reginald had entered the room but had not assisted, just started looking for the eggs, sitting on the table in a small basket. Stepping over the corpse, Thraim attempted some minor magic to detect for magic only to have everything nearby to have it’s gravity reversed. Both Gnome (and the eggs) and Thraim only fell and short distance onto the ceiling and then the floor. Unfortunately, and very amusingly outside the building it wasn’t so lucky. Kerreth found herself falling towards the edge of a building roof and managed to hold on. However, 5 drunk citizens, 2 men having an argument, a cart and two men loading it suddenly found that gravity was reversed and they fell upwards and then downwards with sickening and satifiying splats.
With Gravity returning to normal, The dwarf’s body was placed into Reginald’s hole and his nearby valuables. Reginald and Thraim left wondering what on earth could cause such a minor change in gravity. Kerreth, was less impressed promising to do great harm to the mage who had cast reverse gravity…
